Pregnancy is a beautiful journey and joy for every mother to be. However, it is normal to feel happy one minute only to be crying the next. According to Deborah Issokson, a psychologist from Boston, due to the permanent nature of motherhood, it comes with different emotions such as anxiety, worry, and regrets.

Whichever emotions you experience, all are as a result of an increase in estrogen and progesterone in the body. Besides mood swings, these hormones are responsible for the support and growth of the fetus during pregnancy.

Mood swings range differently depending on what stage you are at pregnancy. For instance, you may not worry so much about birth and your child during the first trimester, but these worries will intensify during the final stage.

Follow these tips to learn how to deal with hormonal changes.

1. Go Easy on Yourself

Patience is a virtue that every pregnant woman needs to master. You might feel like you are not supposed to have those feelings, and something must be wrong if you have them. Unfortunately, this will not help your situation. When you feel like you can’t take any more of it, remember you are not alone. Once you understand that the feeling is temporary and every mother has passed over such experience, you will be able to deal with it.

2. Be Prepared

Knowledge is power. Getting the right kind of information about what to expect during pregnancy can help deal with the hormonal changes. Most mothers get anxious due to the process of childbirth. However, studies show that when you are informed about what to expect, you will feel less anxious.

If you are a first-time mom, you might be worried about the bodily changes that come with pregnancy. You can deal with that beforehand by shopping for plus size maternity clothes and other necessities. Doing this at the beginning will help you eliminate unnecessary worries as your bump grows bigger.

3. Join Support Groups

Talking with other moms to be or those who have gone through the experience will calm you and help you feel normal. Have you checked whether there are several groups both on the internet and within your local community that you can try? I’m sure there are some out there. Studies have proven that support groups can reduce postpartum depression and also help pregnant women cope with hormone imbalances.

4. Try Meditating

Pregnant women who practice mindfulness during pregnancy have shown to reduce stress levels and anxiety, unlike those who don’t. Women have also reported becoming more aware of their body changes after practicing meditation. In an article written on pregnancy and newborn magazine, a mother explained how meditation helped her notice the gap between her contractions. She said the gaps were restorative.

When a pregnant woman is aware of her body changes, she will notice when things are not right and seek the help of a professional.

5. Sleep More

Don’t underestimate the power of sleep in pregnancy, especially during the first trimester. Studies show that sleeping helps keep you calm, and even though you may struggle to get comfortable in your third trimester, you still need to get enough sleep. If you are finding it hard to fall asleep, plan out your time, and include at least one hour rest each day. Make your environment calm and quiet for you to some sleep.

Final Thought

Hormone imbalance can create a lot of mood swings in you as a pregnant mother. These mood swings are a part of pregnancy, and the more you know that the easier it will be for you to cope with them.

Sleeping more, meditating and joining a support group are some of the ways that will help you get through some of the challenges of pregnancy.
