Was your kid born bald or with lots of hair? Either way, time will come when they need their first haircut. And, you are dreading that time since you know it will not be pretty.

In this article, we are going to help you figure out when your toddler should get the first haircut. And, since we care, we have shared tips on how to make that first haircut less unpleasant for both you and your kid.

What’s the right age for the first haircut?

Unfortunately, there’s no definitive answer to that question. Babies born with lots of hair might need a haircut as early as eight months. Those babies born with hardly any hair might not need a haircut until they are two years old.

Personal preference matters

Do you like your kid’s hair long or short? Long hair, especially if it is curly, looks good on most children. However, maintaining that long hair is not easy. Right after cleaning and grooming the hair is when your kid will see fit to take a mud bath or wear their food.

You also need to consider whether you want to preserve the baby curls. Once you nick them, they might not grow back. That said, baby curls are not an issue if you think your 2-year old is ready for the big-kid look.

Consider the gender

Human beings associate hair length with gender. For that reason, it makes sense that a baby boy will get a haircut earlier than a baby girl.

That said, there’s nothing wrong with a short-haired girl or a boy with neck-length hair. It is a question of how conventional you want to be. Plus, a baby doesn’t care about the length of their hair; they are to busy playing, learning to walk, and such stuff.

Start small

Having a pair of scissors or shaver going through the head is a strange and scary experience for any kid. Plus, it is an emotional experience for a parent. It is an important milestone that signifies the end of infanthood. Make the experience a little less scary and emotional by trimming the hair instead of cutting it all at once.

Timing is crucial

Say you have decided it’s about time for that first haircut. Age is not the only thing you should worry about. The first haircut has to happen at the right time – when the kid is in a good mood. Therefore, avoid taking your child for a haircut around meal times and nap times. During such times, kids are cranky.

Also, if your kid is on a particularly bad mood on the day of haircut appointment postponed. You do not want to make an already bad mood worse.

Choose a kid-friendly salon or barbershop

That awesome salon you get your hair done might not be the right place for your kid. You need to find a place that knows how to deal with squirmy little ones. Kid-friendly salons have toys, books to keep your children occupied as they get their hair done.

If you can’t find a kid-friendly salon or stylist, consider doing it yourself. For a trim, a pair of scissors will be sufficient. But, for a close shave, consider one of these best electric shavers

The bottom line: There’s no right time

As a loving, caring, and responsible parent, you want to do everything right. You are constantly worrying that you are not doing things at the right time for your kid. The good news is, when it comes to the first haircut, there is no right time.

Cut your baby’s hair for the first time when you feel it is right. If you are not ready, postpone it to a later date. If you are prepared, book an appointment at the salon or barbershop.
