What to Gift a Newborn

Here in India most people who come to see the baby bring some gift with them. If they don’t, they place money in the baby’s hand.
After my baby was born we got so many gifts and the gifts only increased during the naming ceremony. I value the gesture very much; it is very sweet of everyone to bring something for my baby. But at the same time there are some stuff that we did not use. Some which we put inside for use later.

So I want to list out some stuff which can be gifted to newborns, I’ll do a post later on what you can gift when a baby is 3 months, 6 months and so on..
Please add to the list in the comments section, please don’t be disappointed if your comments goin to moderation state, Ill recover it soon, we just don’t want people spamming the site.

Socks, Sweaters and Caps-Please watch out the weather, don’t gift if its peak summer, otherwise it’s ok as newborns need to be warm.

Sheets, Blankets, Quits– Babies needs many of these so it’s very useful
Rompers, Sleepsuits– this is one dress the baby wears irrespective of gender, it’s very useful to keep the diaper in place with the buttons at the bottom. You can’t go wrong with the size as most of these clothes are made for specific age groups.

  • No powders, soaps, shampoos, oils etc etc

Top Online Sites for Baby Shopping in India

shopping

Here is my compilation of baby shopping sites in India. Ever since my baby was born, I have been very actively shopping online. I used to even shop diapers online during the first 3 months.

Before that, I would like to say that I’m not affiliated with any of these sites (so I’m not adding links).  I have started this blog mainly to help mommys connect, save money, help each other, create business opportunities and get a break from their monotonous life.  My list below.. Where do you guys shop?

Firstcry.com-You get almost all products here. Most of the stuff is the same as Babyoye. Availability is quite an issue. Babyoye is better when it comes to clothes shopping, they have better variety.

Baby oye.com– I am a regular stalker at this site. They clearly display their sales. But one annoying thing about them is that they deliver every product separately. I remember once I got 5 products and my door bell rang and rang for 2 days.

Both sites are prompt in their delivery, diapers and essentials are delivered in one day. Continue reading

Hopscotch.in– One of my favorite sites for imported stuff. They have very good quality stuff and they update sales daily. I got very pretty hair bands for my little one. I could not find such hair bands anywhere. Their packing also is very classy.

Pepperfry.com– decent collection of baby clothes

Indiatimes.com– I got my baby socks from here. Delivery is very slow and they called me saying that they don’t have the color after a week.  Got the product after 10 days.

Hushbabies.com– They have a good variety of international products. But they don’t have much stock as babyoye and firstcry.

Fabfurnish.com– Actually not a baby site, but I got a nice storage from them. I will use it for some time and dispose it. It’s a nice collapsible storage. I did not have any space at home for my baby’s clothes, so I got this one, its easily movable too.

shopping 2

Momandmeshop.in– I’m not a big fan of mom and me shops, everything is way too expensive. However their chat option on the site is good.

Anjjali’s Pregnancy Experience

anjj preg1

I married Abhisshek in Nov,2009 ….and I was expecting in October,2011 J.I still remember  that day when we discovered that I was pregnant, it was my birthday on that day thus it makes it more special .

anjj preg 3

We were soon planning to go to my parents place and my inlaws place for diwali celebrations so we didn’t disclosed anything to them on phone as we wanted to personally see their reaction and share our happiness. It was so difficult to hold on to that news for next 15 days ;-) Continue reading

After everyone came to know about my pregnancy they were super excited and started with all the pampering (which u get only once in life time)… Also my baby is the first child in both our families as me and my hubby are eldest in our respective families..So you know how it is when a new small baby was gonna arrive in both families after almost 22- 23 years.

My pregnancy was hassle free…I didn’t had any problems throughout not even a single vomiting…at times I use to wonder that am I really pregnant…koi pregnancy symptom hi nahi hai J….the only thing I faced was I had got a lot of pigmentation during my entire pregnancy and my face ,neck had become quite dark…thankfully all the pigmentation went away after my baby was born.

I had also gained quite a lot weight around 20-22 kgs inspite of me being super active.

For first 7 months I consulted Dr Pallavi in Fortis,Marathahalli as it was near my home and my friends had referred her to me..I found her very good and comforting..However in my 7 th month, I was moving to UK so she referred me to Dr.Praveena Shenoi in Cloudnine..I found her equally good and by that time had already heard a lot about her and long waiting queues of people to meet her.

We had arranged for a godh bhari function during the 7th month, friends and relatives had come.

anjj preg 2

You know you won’t believe that when your pregnant, you find everyone around you pregnant…..no no I m not kidding I meet so many ladies who were pregnant at the time when I was ….whether it’s my complex, any restaurant, mall everywhere I could locate one or two around me…at that time I use to think oh godddd we all are gonna increase India ka population like anything and indeed we did that J.

I was very regular in my walks and did all regular activities like running my coaching centre and conducting workshops…Infact I was so determined to continue my work that my MIL use to shout at me that even in the labor room your gonna teach your students…everybody use to tell me ki tumhara baccha toh already padh-likhar aayega, J but what to do I didn’t wanted to sit unnecessarily ideal.

There were so many old wives tales, around when u r carrying…but its good not to take any of them seriously and just enjoy listening them, don’t make a particular mindset for any gender and pray for a healthy baby…same is the case with infinite advices u receive.

Me and my husband were very determined that we want a normal delivery no matter what until and  unless there is any emergency…also my both docs  were confident that I will deliver normally as I had a problem free pregnancy and so I did had a normal delivery.

Please stay around for my delivery and labor story..

It was very painful but it was worth J.

I would just sum up saying have a positive outlook and your pregnancy will turn into a positive experience.

By Jaishri

sindhu did

I know Sindhu as this beautiful, chirpy, full of life classmate in college.  She is a Kathak dancer, a Zumba and Aerobics instructor, a successful entrepreneur and she has so many more talents which I would like to cover in her interview.

She went on to marry the love of her life Raj. Sindhu is the mom of 4 year old Veer. Continue reading

Even during college, she used to mange her time so well, attending college (that too telecom engineering ), her Kathak classes, her shows abroad, and so much more. Everyone who knows her will know how she values time and the little interaction with her would be so worthwhile. She would have brought in such a positive impact in the little time you spend with her.

Sindhu was also one of the finalists in Dance India Dance Supermoms aired on Zee TV. And now she has won Mrs Bangalore. Our hearty congratulations to you, Sindhu. May this be just another new beginning that takes you to greater heights.

Please watch out for Sindhus interview in the coming posts. If you have something to ask Sindhu add it to the comments section.

Baby Food Recipe 5 months- Banana and Avacado

BY Jaishri,

My pediatrician adviced us to start off with basic fruits and veggies after my baby turned 5 months.

IMG_1477

Here are some things that were adviced:

Fruits- Banana, Avocado, Apple Mash

Veggies- Boil veggies and only give the soup, Potato mash, Sweet Potato mash, carrot boiled and mashed very well.

Dal/ Lentil water (add some jeera/cumin while boiling the dal) Continue reading

Please note that since your baby is very small don’t give anything raw to the baby and make sure it is in a soup or cereal form. Even tit bits are not allowed. Pass everything through a sieve. Here is one of my recipes.

I did not want to add sugar to the avocado so I added banana for the sweetness and my baby eats a bit of this every alternate day. She hates apples or any other fruits right now, even carrot she refused.

Scoop out avocado and cut banana (use the small ones, it’s called yelakki here in Bangalore)

IMG_1471

Boil it with water for a few minutes; you can also steam the fruits.

IMG_1474

Put it on a sieve and press the mash down with a spoon and then scoop the pulp from the back side of the sieve.

Add boiling water to adjust the consistency of the mash.

Cradle Ceremony

By Jaishri,

IMG_0974

Cradle ceremony is called Punya dhanam here in the south. It is performed mostly on the 16th day after childbirth.

It’s a day when we perform a small Pooja to purify the house. Only after this day is the mother and baby allowed to step out of the house. After the ceremony the next day we went to a temple close to our house for darshan. We called a purohit home and performed this pooja. Continue reading

As it was a function at home we invited a few relatives. We decorated my daughters cradle.

Another tradition is to decorate the cradle with the wedding saree of the mother. First a small statue of Lord Krishna is placed inside the cradle and then the baby is placed in the cradle.

If the baby’s birth affects some family member’s star a shanthi pooja also has to be conducted. They did it for me though I dont believe in this.

My baby was very small and slept through this whole ritual.

We arranged for simple food as we were to do the naming ceremony when she turned 5 months in a bigger way. Read more about her naming ceremony in the posts to follow.

Beauty Tips for New Moms

By Jaishri

beautytips

All moms here would agree with me that they hardly looked at the mirror during the first few days after childbirth. I did not even want to look at myself in the mirror. I had gained so much weight and I’m still fighting with it.

I still wore those oversized Kurtha’s that I was wearing during pregnancy. Until one day I decided that I really need to do something about it.

So here is my compilation of beauty tips, please feel free to disagree or add your tips: Continue reading

Weight loss: I know it’s very hard and as a new mom it’s almost impossible to shed those pounds fast. Even I’m working very hard on this, as I think weight loss is more of a health issue than beauty tip.

Ill share my weight gain and weight loss story (I have lost very little) with you shortly. As its impossible to hit the gym, do all the baby work yourself, that’s the best gym you can find.

If people told you to eat a lot because your breastfeeding and that you lose weight breastfeeding. It’s not true for everyone. So watch what you eat, don’t overeat. Lactation will improve as you breastfeed often.

Skin Care: It’s again impossible to sit through a facial or apply all those packs and let it for drying.

So my advice, head to a dermatologist. My skin became really worse after childbirth, it was glowing during pregnancy. Also, breastfeeding causes acne in some people. So I started treatment with my dermatologist. They will just replace your face wash and daily use cream with a medicated one so it won’t take much effort.

Hair care: I had very bad dandruff due to all the stress and lack of sleep. Again I am getting treated for it, using an anti dandruff shampoo for it.

Makeup: If I start off with makeup, I would have kajal on my cheeks and lipstick on my forehead. Ok I’m exaggerating.. Just get yourself a nice Sheer powder like MAC Sheer pressed powder, a kajal and a lipbalm preferably tinted. So you’re done. I use Shahnaz Hussain kajal and Body Shop lipbalm.

Hairdo: Ok this one is the trickiest. A bad hair talks so much about you. I used to hardly have time to comb my hair, it used to get all knotted and dry. So I cut my hair short, shoulder length, just that I could wear a small ponytail. But then it looked too plain and short when I left it loose but it was very easy to manage.

I think for the first 3 months its ok as you won’t be leaving the house much. But as your baby gets bigger, it’s better to get a good haircut. Don’t hesitate to cut your hair shorter in the front. Else you will have the same look. As your returning from the parlor get a few pins, and pin up the hair in front when your at home. When your going out remove the pin. The entire boring mommy look will vanish.

Clothing: Pack up all your old clothes and put it in some unreachable place and look at the weighing scale. Promise yourself that you will take out those clothes when you go back to your pre-pregnancy weight.  Get yourself few new clothes that fits well and that has buttons to make breastfeeding easier. If you’re stitching salwars, ask your tailor to button the salwar in front. Jeans and a nursing top are also ideal. Get yourself nice stoles and dupattas, they are your saviors.

Top Five Possible Baby Injuries (PBI)

By Megha,

injury

Hello mommies..This is my first article on the blog and I am sooooo excited to write. It is a natural tendency of women to protect her loved ones and once she turns into a mom, her sole concern is towards her baby. She loves and protects her new born’s life in every manner. I am highlighting few
most commonly encountered baby injuries. Here is a list and I wish your baby never faces it.

Falls:  this is the most common injury faced by a child at home. It is frequently seen that babies roll off the beds, couch and tables. This is the biggest dangers for the parents because kids easily learn how to climb on to the beds and explore new things.

Here are few methods to prevent this injury:

  1. Most common, put some pillows around the baby when he/she is on the bed.
  2. Put soft material under play area.
  3. Do not put bouncing cradle on the table as they can easily tip off the edge.
  4. Supervise your baby when using baby furniture.

Electrical injury: from the time your baby starts crawling, your tension would be doubled. Protecting the small little fingers from the electric sockets is very important. Cover all the sockets which are low lying and are in easy reach of your baby when he or she is on tour of the house. Continue reading

Suffocating and chocking: during initial few months of life, babies get gratification from their oral region. You must have noticed they easily put in their mouth whatever is brought close to them. So keeping a check on your things is important.

  1. Keep small little things out their reach
  2. Do not put coins hither and thither ,as they are the most common cause of choking in babies
  3. Keep plastic bags away from their reach
  4. Buy them the toys according to their age

Bath injuries: as far as I have noticed, babies love being in water. But to keep them safe while giving a bath is very important. Here are few tips:

  1. Check the water temperature before putting it on to your baby.
  2. Get everything ready in advance including his towels, nappies etc so that you don’t have to leave the baby alone in the bathroom
  3. Never ask the baby’s siblings to take care of the baby. They might not be too intelligent to
  4. Always turn off the gas geyser and rods used for boiling the water before you enter the

Poisonings: yet another problem which can turn into a big issue. Keep all the bottles of shampoos, liquid soaps, cosmetic products, floor disinfectants out the reach of the child. Make sure they have resistant caps which cannot be opened by the baby. Dispose of the unwanted medicines and keep a check while they are playing out the garden.

All in all babies are prone to so many injuries but to safeguard them is the duty of their family membersto handle the situation in emergency. Hope you liked the work and It would be fun if you share your baby story related something to it.
