The Monsoon Affair – Baby and Childcare during Monsoons

By Rekha Menon,

 monsoon

Monsoon is traditionally defined as a seasonal reversing wind accompanied by corresponding changes in precipitation. Courtesy – Wikipedia

In simple words it’s the lovely time of the year when it rains and everything turns lush green. It is a cool relief after the hot summer. It also brings some not so lovely things like humid weather, flooded roads, traffic blocks, mosquitoes, and a host of health problems.

Common ailments that can hit your baby or toddler are cough, cold, nose block, viral fever, stomach flu or diarrhea, fungal infections. Here are a few precautionary tips to help you tackle them.

  • Keep your hands clean while you touch your child and encourage your child to wash up before and after he eats. If your child is older, make it a practice to wash hands and feet after play. Ensure his nails are always trimmed and clean. The best option while out of home is using a hand sanitizer which is easily available in medical stores.
Bonus tip: Add a few drops of neem oil/leaves to the bath
  • Dress your child in loose cotton clothes, full pants and full sleeves preferably to keep the mosquito bites away. If it is cold in the evening, wrap your child in a jacket or cardigan.

  • Avoid damp clothes/ socks that may lead to infections. Warm clothes stuffed in the cupboard can be air dried and kept ready for use before the rainy season.
Bonus tips: Iron your child’s clothes before he wears them to remove any moisture.
  • Use an anti-fungal powder before putting on his clothes or diaper. (Abzorb dusting powder has worked well for me)
  • Use boiled and cooled water or filtered water for drinking. Wash the milk bottles and sippers in warm water. Clear any stagnant water in and around your home to prevent breeding of mosquitoes.
Bonus tip: You can add few cumin seeds to the boiled drinking water to rehydrate the body apart from other medicinal properties of cumin.
  • Keep your child indoors during the first rain as it can be acidic and could cause skin problems.
Bonus tip: You can lure your toddler to sit indoors and watch the rain by sipping some hot chocolate milk and his favorite snack maybe some chicken nuggets ;)
  • Here is a simple and quick drink for a one+ year old/ new mom/ soon-to-be mom
Boil a cup of milk with a cardamom, small piece of crushed ginger, 2strands of saffron and 1tsp sugar. Enjoy !
  • Last but not the least keep your first aid kit always handy and stocked up with the medicines needed for common cold and cough (which is difficult to avoid).

And all you mommies out there don’t get so busy attending to your baby that you neglect yourself, especially breastfeeding mums…You need to take extra care.

So take all the precautions for yourself as well because Healthy Mothers make Healthy Babies!

Now that we are geared up for the showers let’s just enjoy them!

Importance of Baby Sleep

By Megha,

sleep

Hello mommies. Your baby might not let you sleep, but I would like to tell you few things about his or her sleep.

Good sleep is crucial. Growth hormones are produced when your baby is sleeping, plus it boosts immunity.

Most new borns, from birth to 28 days, sleep for at least 18- 20 hours. However, they might have disturbed sleep, frequent waking and irregular sleep if they are colicky or hungry.

They generally wake up once or twice at night and stay awake for a few minutes to an hour. All this is a part of your baby’s development.

Apart from giving your baby regular night time feeds, you need to engage, play or put the baby to sleep. As your baby grows, about 14-16 hrs. sleep is essential. Continue reading

Every baby is different but you can start structuring your baby’s bed time by the time he or she is 3months old. As they grow older the sleep duration also decreases.

Toddlers sleep about 12 to 14 hours, about ten hours in the night and 2-4 hours in the noon.

So all you mommies this was a brief description of your baby’s sleep.

Mommyswall Old Wives Tales Girl vs Boy Comparison

chinese gender new

Hello all the expecting mommies.. Hope you are all in good health.

Here is one fun topic I’m sure most of you would have been thinking about during your pregnancy.

Since we don’t have gender determination in India we keep guessing if we are having a boy or girl, and you must have heard everyone around you guessing if you have a girl or boy.

So Anjjali and Me have decided to do a fun post here with the old wives tales and our experiences. Btw Anjjali is the momma of Aaditya and Maanvi is my daughter.

So here is the comparisons, let us know your experience

Old Wives Tale: If you are having a little girl, you will have clear glowing skin with no acne.

Jaishri :I had glowing skin no acne anything- True

Anjjali: I had a pigmented, dull skin and I have a baby boy – True

Old Wives Tale: Take off your wedding ring and tie it to a thread, and hang it over your belly. If it swings in a circle, you have a boy; back and forth a girl.

Jaishri : Did not try

Anjjali : Me too did not try

Old Wives Tale: Your baby’s heart rate is under 140 beats per minute then your having a little boy. If it’s over 140 then girl.

Jaishri : True- heart beat was always over 150-160

Anjjali : False- heart beat was 180

Old Wives Tale : If your craving sweets then your going to have a little girl. Salty and sour cravings indicate a boy.

Jaishri : False- I was craving spicy food and salty cheese

Anjjali : I did not have any particular cravings and I liked sweet and salt both

Old Wives Tale: Chinese Birth chart

Jaishri : False for me

Anjjali : False for me too..it predicted girl in every calendar

Old Wives Tale: If your husband puts on a little weight then your going to have a girl.

Jaishri : True, not that he really gains weight.. but maybe 1kg so I say true.

Anjjali : Dont know

Old Wives Tale: Lot of morning sickness indicates girl, if you didn’t have a lot of morning sickness , then boy.

Jaishri : False not much nausea and I have never thrown up.

Anjjali : True

Old Wives Tale: If your feet got colder in pregnancy then boy, for girl vice versa or no change in temperature.

Jaishri : I had warm feet- True

Anjjali : I dont remember

Old Wives Tale: Did your nose get wider or change, if so your having a boy.

Jaishri : True- my nose was normal

Anjjali : True – my nose did grow wider

Old Wives Tale: If you are carrying high then you are having a girl. If you are carrying low with a smaller belly then you’re having a boy.

Jaishri : False- everyone who saw my stomach said boy

Anjjali : True – I carried low and everyone said it’s a boy

So guys shall we conclude that all this is not true.. and you can just try it for fun and not take anything seriously. It’s better not to expect anything, you all should be able to welcome your baby with a big smile. Cheers!!

How to Select a Hospital for Childbirth/Delivery

hospital

Hi Mommys and soon to be mommys this is another post for you guys.

If you followed my older posts you will know that I changed my hospital during the end of my delivery for better facilities in the hospital. So here are some points that you need to look at:

  • Does your doctor perform deliveries in that hospital? if not, find out who is the best doctor in the hospital that you have selected.
  • Does the hospital support different types of deliveries that you are looking for, for example water birth, epidural during C section etc.
  • Does the hospital have many Operation Theatres and rooms so that they don’t shoo you away because you have not made bookings. This happened to my friend in Columbia Asia.
  • Does the hospital support premature birth. This is the most important facto,r do not choose a place without NICU (neonatal ICU), you never want to take a risk with the baby.
  • Does the hospital comply with your insurance, does your insurance company cover these fancy packages.
  • Does the hospital have 24/7 doctors on duty and ambulance facility for emergency.
  • Does the hospital have an ICU for you and a blood bank?
  • Do they know how to perform stem cell banking?
  • Read reviews and feedback online, ask people around, only when your satisfied select the hospital.

I know I have missed out distance. That’s really not important, there is no ways you will deliver your baby on the way to the hospital, labor and delivery takes a long time.

Hope this post helped you.. Please Like our Facebook page for regular updates. Thankyou!

Chennai Express Movie Review

chennai express

So ladies how many of you watched Chennai Express? I did yesterday and would like to thank my dear friend Anjjali for suggesting the movie to me.

It’s been long since I watched Hindi movies. I’m more of a documentary and real cinema fan.  I even love short films and world movies. But then I wanted to have some fun.

I wanted a break from the hectic childcare work that I do, so I decided to watch the movie on my laptop after my little one sleeps. I asked my hubby to watch with me and by the time Sharukh boarded Chennai express he had dosed off.

Anyways I really enjoyed the movie, especially the first part in the train. Sad part is that Deepika and some of the guys in the movie could not speak tamil fluently. Continue reading

But the kkaaas and keeees, yea ask me about it, I’m still figuring out how and where to add gender
(pu-ling and stree-ling) in Hindi. I think all south Indians face this problem. A typical masala movie, I have seen some glimpses in other Tamil films.

Deepika could have put on a little weight, Tamil girls are not so skinny atleast the village ones. Otherwise her acting was good, SRK in comedy was great, he is full of life.

A no-brainer but makes you laugh and that’s what I needed at the moment. The last bit was dragging.

Nice songs, and “lungi dance” was very funny. I was controlling my laughter during some scenes as my baby would get up.

Do let me know about any other good movie.. I don’t have to mindframe for serious movies now..

Importance of Bonding with Your Baby

By Megha

bonding

Hello mommie!!!

This article is too short but its significance is large. The snuggles, hugs and kisses are more powerful than you thought.

It has been said that a parent child bonding can prevent illness, boost immunity and improve IQ besides lending emotional security. Continue reading

And this bonding should start as soon as your baby is born. Once your new born is wiped dry, and wrapped in pre-warmed sheets, ask for her to be next to you.

This helps with the skin to skin contact, provides warmth, promotes bonding and encourages breast feeding.
As your baby starts growing, start spending more time with her or him, cuddling, playing and reading to foster healthy development.

Diaper Drama- Baby Stools

By Megha

poopnew

Hello mommies. Here am I with another cute and short article related to you baby’s stool.

What you see in your baby’s diaper might give you some idea about what’s going on inside his system.

  • The stool should be soft and golden yellow ( don’t count the first few days, when the poop can go from black to green)
  • In breastfed babies, stools may be slightly grainy. This is normal
  • Bottle-fed babies are more likely to suffer from constipation.
  • Green and watery stools might be a cause of worry as they are an indication of infection.
  • If the stool is consistently pale and looks like cement, it could be a sign of obstruction in the liver.
  • Black tarish stool is also not normal.

Consult your paediatrician in all the above three cases.

So I hope it is not only the feed that you give to the baby that is important but also the excreta that he/she gives off plays an important role in signifying the baby’s health.

10 Ways to Cover Your Baby Bump

I know some of you must be wondering why Im doing a post like this. But most of us at some point wanted to cover our bump, Im sure right?

Same happened with me, I did not want anyone at my workplace to know that Im pregnant for sometime, as I did not want unnecessary attention and I was very nervous to break the news. I wanted to wait for some time. So if you guys are going through the same phase, heres my list:

  • Wear Flowy Bohemian long dresses

  • Accessorise  as much as possible to drive away attention from your changing body. Wear attractive bags, shoes, neckpieces, and scarfs. Scarfs, stoles and dupattas can be your best friend in hiding the bump.

  • Try a makeover like a new hairstyle or changing the color of your hair. So people will be more bothered about that.

Baby Height and Weight Parameters

By Megha

Hello mommies. I know how curious you are while sitting at the doctor’s clinic to know is your baby in his or her normal development. You want to know that hope he or she is not under weight or his/her height is optimum. Here I am solving your query:

bbay height

I am telling you the incremental height gain of your babyJ

  • At birth height is almost 20 inches.
  • From 0-6months, there is an increase of 1 inch/month which brings the height to 26 inches
  • From 6- 12 months an increase of ½ inches per month can be seen in the baby leading to a height of 32 inches.

This is how your baby develops in height during first year of life. Continue reading

Coming to the weight, at birth usually the baby is 7-8lb.

  • From 0-4 months increase in the weight can be 2lb/month causing the weight to be 15-16lb.
  • From 4-12 months again the weight rises by 2lb/month leading to a gain up to 23-24lb.

Hope your queries have been cleared to some extent. Enjoy everyone. :)
