Keeping Your Kids Busy – Challenge Accepted

By Fiona Greyson,

Kids are so lovely and gentle when they keep calm and so annoying when being mischievous. They can make you laugh and drive you insane at the same time. Unless you want to lose your sanity, you should find a way to keep your children busy. If you have run out of ideas, check out this article.

Here we offer a few suggestions to keep your offspring engaged in an activity so you finally have some free time to housekeep or rest. Even though parenting is a 24/7 job, you still need to have a break every now and then. So here are the tips, read carefully.

Play outside

If it’s sunny, encourage your kids to play outside. Spending the afternoon kicking a soccer ball is a great activity that will develop their muscles and… keep them busy. When they get tired, they will feel drowsy and will cause fewer problems.

Perhaps your children will be eager to play hopscotch. You know, those rectangles with numbers that people jump on. This is a very popular game, with which you must have entertained yourself when you were little.

Jump rope is another great suggestion. As a whole, any game that requires physical activity is good for your offspring. Sport is essential for all human beings, especially for children.

Painting outside is better than inside for two reasons: no more painted walls and no more spills on the floor and anywhere else in the house. Take your children outside and make them draw paintings. For example, you can ask them to draw a picture of the scenery. You should not be afraid to give them acrylic and tempera paints. And since they are playing outside, they can paint rocks. Just make sure your pick smooth, round rocks, the size of a baseball.

Another funny activity that will keep your children engaged is digging warms. It is funny and time-consuming. Your kids will surely spend hours doing this. Continue reading

Wash the coins

This is another great game that your children might love. You’ll need a bowl, some salt and vinegar. And dirty pennies, of course. Fill ¼ of the bowl with vinegar. Add some salt. Kosher salt is best to use in this case. Show your children how the game is played. Drop one penny into the bowl and stir. When you’re done, the penny will be shiny. If you want to really keep your kids busy with this game, you’d better find the dirties coins. To add to the excitement of the game, tell your children that they can keep a few of the pennies once they are done washing. This will stimulate them to work harder.

Engage your children in cleaning

From a very early age your kids should learn that it’s very important to keep things tidy and clean. If they tidy up their own mess, they will probably learn to make less clutter. So how can you persuade your children into cleaning their rooms? Turn cleaning into a game.

Tell your children that the first one to clean his/her room will get a candy. Or you can run a contest where every item on the floor should be picked up and placed back where it belongs. This is one of the best ways to make your kids gather all their toys and socks from the floor. But be careful, as they will be in a rush to clean the mess and win the game, they may make the mess bigger. Be sure to warn them that only a really clean and tidy room is what matters in the end.  In the end you may need to book tenancy cleaning procedure but you must take that risk.

6 Tips to keep your child “Winter Safe”

By Jyoti Kumar – Founder Twinkling Star

Cool breezy winters. Numb cold winters. Icy, windy, rainy winters. Snowfall. …all this and more makes winter season magical and at the same time difficult for your little ones. Covered in woolens and snuggling in blankets keeps them warm from outside but at the same time drinking hot chocolate and sipping hot delicious soups will keep their bodies in comfort zone.

Festive mood engulfs everyone as we celebrate Christmas and New Years and look forward to spend time with our loved ones and travel during year-end holidays. To ensure that your little ones survive the coldest season without falling sick, take a look at these six safety tips. They’re best read when you’re snuggled up in a warm blanket with some hot cocoa!

1.      Winter Appliances check

Check to see that all heating appliances like geysers, heaters, blowers and heating rods are in good working condition. These appliances usually need power points so it would be a good idea to call an electrician to check them and ensure that they can carry the load. This way you can avoid short circuits which could lead to fire hazards.

You might like to get your winter bed spreads, blankets, quilts or razais washed or dry-cleaned before you need to use them to keep warm in the winter.  Continue reading

2.      Cover them up!

Children shouldn’t leave the house without wearing nice thick layers of clothing. However, they should not be overdressed. These layers, which are more effective than one big winter coat or snowsuit, should include thermal underwear, wool socks, turtlenecks, sweaters, sweatpants and a water-resistant jacket. Windy days can feel much colder than the actual temperature. When deciding how long kids (and adults!) can play outdoors safely, the windchill factor is most important.

3.      Winter proof their Skin

Children have soft, tender skin, and that soft skin’s mortal enemy is winter weather. There are arrays of painful problems that can result without proper care. First up: dryness. Not only will cold air dry out skin, so too will the heat blasting indoors. To fight against dry skin conditions, slather a heavy moisturizer or petroleum jelly on your child. You may want to consider putting a humidifier in a child’s room, particularly if he or she is susceptible to winter nosebleeds. But the usage of a heater / humidifier for a child should be moderate.  And there is one thing that you should practice in winters religiously – give a bath to your child every day irrespective of the temperature. Try to keep the room warm and give them a hot bath as they will enjoy being fresh throughout the day; remind them that they have to wash their hands religiously; it’s cold and flu season, after all.

Even though it’s winter, you still need to put sunscreen on your kids before they go out to play as winter sun is harsh on their skin.

4.      Chapping

Prevent it by applying a barrier of petroleum jelly (after sunscreen) on any exposed areas of the face before your child goes outside. Apply moisturizer often when indoors and consider getting your child a face mask for outdoor play if it’s a frequent problem.

5.      Snuggle up

Make time to simply snuggle up with your baby. This will provide comfort and warmth to your little one, not to mention the joy of bonding and spending some quality time with you!

6.      Food to keep your baby warm

Dates, Nuts. If you need to tide kids over with a snack, give them nuts. The protein and fat content make them an ideal winter snack food. Cook with nuts and seeds as well.Crush it for toddlers.

Spices. Whether you tend toward cinnamon, ginge, garlic and spices are particularly good for you during the winter. Ginger helps you digest the fatty foods your body craves in the winter, and antibacterial and antiviral effects of foods like garlic help you fight off infections.

Curry. My favorite winter food is curry. I have a long list of my favorite Indian and Thai curries with little chillies and ginger. These make an ideal winter lunch. They will feel warm and full all afternoon with no temptation to snack before dinner. Most children favor peanut-based curries that aren’t quite as spicy.

Soups. Give your children warm vegetable/chicken soup. Spice them up with their favourite sauces and they will slurp it all up.

Honey. This natural sweetener has many benefits and gives a glowing complexion too.

Fruits and vegetables. Winter is the time when warming foods are in abundance. Fruit chaats and fruit pie of oranges, plums, peaches, pears, guavas, berries, apples, dates are most welcomed by all.  Also, one can make a salad of carrots, oranges, beetroot or have a simple vegetable punch!

Having A Baby (or second baby) Through IVF

When you talk about In-vitro fertilization (or test-tube babies as they are commonly called), most people assume that the subject is of importance only to those couples who are unable to conceive a baby naturally. However, this is a misunderstanding. IVF treatments are increasingly becoming a popular option even for couples who may have conceived the first baby naturally. Yes! Your first baby may have been a natural birth but that is no longer a reason to stop you from opting for IVF or assisted reproduction techniques while planning your second pregnancy (if you are struggling with the same). There are thousands of couples across the globe willing to tread the IVF route for their second baby due to several reasons.

What exactly is IVF?

IVF (In-Vitro Fertilization) is a medical procedure in which egg from female partner is fertilized with sperm from a male partner outside the woman’s body in a lab. Continue reading

When is IVF primarily used?

The IVF procedures are used broadly when

1. Egg quality is not suitable for natural fertilization

2. Sperm quality is not suitable for natural fertilization

3. Uterus (womb) quality is not suitable for natural pregnancy.

Usually, IVF is an excellent procedure for couple who are unable to conceive naturally even after several years of trying. Even in case of those who have had their first baby naturally, the second attempts may not be as fruitful and so IVF becomes your best bet.

Age of female partner is an important factor as it has direct impact on the quality of eggs. Thanks to the woman’s biological clock, the male partner does not have up till eternity to keep trying. As the age progresses, her ability to conceive naturally decreases and so relying on IVF for the second baby can be extremely helpful.

There are several mothers who like to devote all their attention to the first baby. In fact, they even avoid planning a second one until the first one is old enough. Sometimes, even the financial capabilities of the parents restrict them from planning the second pregnancy within a short time of the first one. There could be several reasons that force the parents to opt for a big age gap between the first natural birth and planning of second pregnancy.  Given such situations, chances are your system may have been idle for a relatively longer period and so it might not be as responsive as it once was to your attempts of getting pregnant. Seeking the advice of IVF experts, who are usually Gynaecologists with specialization in infertility treatments, in these cases can help you plan your second pregnancy in a better way.

Is it safe?

A lot of mothers planning their second pregnancy through IVF are always worried about the safety of the treatment. Prior to arriving at any conclusion about IVF treatments, we would strongly advise you to talk to a reputed fertility expert.

The doctors will not proceed until they do a complete physical examination of the couple with the objective to find reason for inability to have a baby naturally. So tests are usually to test

1. If enough good quality of eggs are being produced

2. If sperm quality is good

3. If the uterus is providing the right environment for fertilization and implantation of embryos.

Am I eligible?

Eligibility for fertility treatments like IVF is always decided on the basis of a detailed examination. However, if you have conceived your first baby naturally, your reproductive system is most likely to be in good shape making you an eligible candidate for IVF treatments. In fact, since the ivf doctors usually recommend trying natural means (intercourse) for some more time, there have been cases when the candidate ends up conceiving naturally during the process of undergoing IVF investigations.

Will I be able to afford it?

The cost of IVF treatment depends on the nature of infertility (i.e. the reasons for why you are not being able to conceive naturally). The simplest treatment can start at Rs. 7,000/- and the more detailed treatments can start at Rs. 1,50,000/-.

You can read more about the cost of ivf treatment in India here

If you have any questions regarding ivf please comment below and we will be happy to answer

Dhalia Khichdi – Baby Food 7 months plus

By Anitha

dhalia

Dhalia or cracked wheat is a great choice when it comes to baby food. It has all the essential fibers and nutrients. You can safely feed it to babies above 7 months. I don’t have a detailed recipe as such, just soak wheat in water for 1 hour and cook it with water in a pressure cooker. Ratio 1:3.

While feeding you can add some ghee/butter, salt, a pinch of pepper or cumin powder.

Why calcium is so important during pregnancy?

By Rita Singha

Calcium, the most abundant mineral in the human body also has many crucial functions. It plays an important role in strengthening bones and teeth, proper development of bones, functioning of enzymes, regulating the muscle contraction and relaxation, regulating heart function, blood clotting, signal transmission in nerves and much more.

Dietary intake of calcium is vital

Calcium deficiency causes disruptions in many processes. Whenever the body notices that there isn’t enough calcium circulating in the blood, it automatically uses hormones to reduce the calcium put out by kidneys via urine. If the gastrointestinal tract also is unable to absorb enough calcium, then it is finally taken from the bones. The body is in a constant process of breaking down and building up bone tissues. Therefore it is all the more important to maintain healthy bones. This can be done by maintaining a balanced diet and regular weight bearing exercise which helps the body maintain the right levels of hormones. Continue reading

So, if your dietary intake of calcium is somehow always on the lower side, the body gets into a mode that removes so much calcium from the skeleton that your bones eventually become weak and very brittle. That’s why you need to change your eating pattern during Pregnancy.

Importance of calcium during pregnancy

During pregnancy this demand for calcium further increases. It is now also needed for building strong bones and teeth for your baby. Not only that, it is also necessary for a healthy heart, nerves, muscles, blood clotting as well as to break down fat.

It is known that more than 98% of the calcium in the body is found in the skeleton. A calcium rich diet becomes all the more crucial during pregnancy for the development of your infant’s bones as well as to maintain your own bones.

Pregnancy demands that your calcium intake rise from 800mg a day to 1100mg a day. That’s a good 300mg extra per day. This is equivalent to 1 extra serving of calcium rich food.

Pregnant women need to eat around 4 servings of calcium rich food everyday to meet their calcium needs – especially during the last 3 months of pregnancy.

Baby will draw calcium from your bones!

Your baby requires calcium for development, well, if you don’t get enough calcium from your daily diet, your baby will satisfy its calcium requirements from your bones through the placenta. This impairs your health and increases the risk of developing osteoporosis at a later stage in life. Osteoporosis is the loss of bones that results in fragile bones and increased risk of fracture.

Hypertensive disorders during pregnancy

Proper intake of calcium can reduce the risk of hypertensive disorders during pregnancy. A considerable number of maternal deaths and a significant number of premature births as well as major causes of infant mortality is associated with hypertensive disorders during pregnancy.

Calcium supplements during pregnancy greatly reduce the risk of developing blood pressure. Studies show a good 45% reduction in blood pressure. Calcium is recommended for prevention of preeclampsia in pregnancy, particularly those at higher risk of developing hypertension.

It’s good to know that…

Fortunately, pregnancy protects most women’s calcium reserves by helping pregnant women absorb calcium from food and supplements better. Also during pregnancy, women produce more estrogen, hormone that protects bones. Any bone mass lost during pregnancy is typically restored within several months after delivery.

The right amount of calcium can go a long way to provide abundance of health to you and your loved one. Nature provides its resources through a variety of foods and supplements to compliment our requirements. The key to our optimum good health and our child’s is in our hands.

Parenting Questions: Clean Children’s Teeth

By Fiona Greyson,

There is no doubt that parenting is a challenge. It is a complex combination of millions of daily responsibilities you have to deal with in order to provide your child with good care. Raising a kid is indeed a complicated thing to do and involves a number of tasks that you have to cope with.

When it comes to child care, one of the essentials is to provide your kids with ideal hygiene and thus also teach them how to do it on their own. Tooth brushing is one of the most important things a parent has show their kids in terms of hygiene. It’s necessary for every child to have clean teeth that gives them a beautiful and healthy smile. Here is Chalk Farm cleaning help  on when to start and how to do it properly.

When To Start

The best time to start brushing the teeth of your child is as soon as you see the first tooth growing. The earlier you start with it, the easier it will be for the baby to get used to the process of brushing and not be too bothered by it. Teeth usually start growing after the age of six months and by the age of two and a half years all of the teeth should have already grown. You should brush your baby’s teeth at least twice a day for a couple of minutes. This is a good way to give children the habit of brushing. But yet, don’t expect your kid to start cleaning his/her teeth on his/her own shortly after that. You will most probably have to assist your child till he/she turns at least five or six and you’re certain that he/she can do it properly.

What Kind Of Toothbrush To Use

Now that your baby’s first tooth has already grown, it’s time to start cleaning it. At first you will probably find it more comfortable to use a piece of link instead of a toothbrush but as soon as a few more teeth grow too, you should consider buying a special toothbrush. Since baby’s teeth are very sensitive, it’s necessary to use a toothbrush that has soft bristles and angled front.  The angled head will help you get more easily to parts in the mouth of your kid that are harder to reach. There are different toothbrushes that are designed for different ages, so check that and buy one that is suitable for your kid. Make sure you replace the toothbrush with a new one every couple of months.

What Kind Of Toothpaste To Use

In addition to the right toothbrush to buy, you also have to consider the most appropriate toothpaste for your child. Fluoride is one of the main ingredients in a toothpaste that prevents teeth from decaying. However, excess amounts of it can have a negative effect as well. Children under the age of three, and especially little babies, should use a toothpaste that has a smaller amount of fluoride in it. There are different types of toothpastes with fruit flavour that are designed for children. It’s a good option if your child can’t stand the taste of traditional toothpaste. However, make sure you teach your child to spit the toothpaste and not swallow it and that toothpastes with fruit flavours are not food. On the other hand, if you want to get your child used to the real taste of a toothpaste, don’t go for one that tastes like fruit.

How To Clean Children’s Teeth

Clean your child’s teeth at least twice a day – once in the morning and once in the evening. Apply a small amount of toothpaste, about the size of a pea would be enough. Do it with circular moves and make sure you brush gently.
