Baby Food: Moong Dal Khichdi

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

khichdi

Recently we stayed at the Taj and I was left with no option but to order baby food from them as my daughter did not want to go out. Though it was pricey, the quantity is more than enough for mom and baby. And the accompaniments were great, khichdi is served with matka yogurt, pickels and papads. And with Taj hospitality you can feel the extra love in the food. So both me and my kid totally loved the khichdi.

So once we were back home, the first thing I wanted to do is replicate the same dish. I usually use toor dal for khichdi but this time I used moong dal and it turned out the same way. And who said baby food is not tasty?? try this out.. you will love it too.

Ingredients:

  • Rice- 1/2 cup
  • Moong dal -1/2 cup (Im using small cups here)
  • Onion – 1/2
  • Tomato- 1/2 big one
  • Ginger- 1/4 inch piece
  • Garlic- 2-3 pods
  • Cumin seeds- 1/2 tsp
  • Green chilli – 1/2 big one
  • Coriander leaves- 1/4 cup
  • Ghee- 1tbspn
  • Salt
  • Turmeric powder- 1/4 tsp

Procedure:

Cook dal and rice with 2 cups water in a pressure cooker. I cook for 3-4 whistles.

In a mixer blend onion, ginger, garlic and coriander leaves.

In a pan add ghee and add cumin seeds, when the seeds pop add the ground mixture and fry or 1-2 mins on a low flame, finally add turmeric powder and turn off the flame. Add this tadka to the rice and dal. Add salt and water and again heat the cooker with an open lid.

Now chop tomatoes finely (really small bits) and add to the cooker and boil till it blends. You can top it up with more ghee while feeding your kids.
