Your baby may look very cute while sucking his/ her thumb in the beginning, but their intensity of sucking goes on increasing as the time passes. There comes a time when we parents, starts to worry about this habit of our child.

Why is your child sucking the thumb?? Is this the question that strikes your mind? Well answer to this question is given in my previous article.

Today, I am here to tell you what to do when your baby sucks his thumb & how to prevent them from doing so ….

Fill The Feeding Bottle Little Extra

It is observed that the, babies who are bottle fed are more likely to suck their thumb. It is because, the babies who are fed with help of bottle complete their food/ formula/ milk, faster as compared to the ones who are fed otherwise. Hence they may end up sucking their thumb. It may also happen that, they may be a little bit more hungry than usual, as we don’t know when there hunger will increase.

It’s Habit Not A Behaviour

Make it clear in your mind that, sucking, is not behaviour but a habit. This understanding will make a whole lot of a difference in your approach towards your kid & his habit. So next time, you see your kid engrossed in sucking his thumb, don’t punish him. Instead, talk to him, cuddle him, and play a little just to distract him, from this habit.

Be Present For Your Kid

It seen , that if babies are left alone or say feel lonely or stressed out due to what so ever reason , they tend to suck their thumb.  It’s their way to soothe themselves.

So just, be their with your kid, be around him all the while at least let him feel so, that you are there for him.

Make Him Fall A Sleep

Some babies suck their thumb, just to make themselves fall a sleep. So next time onwards, be there, to help your baby fall a sleep.

Sing a lullaby, cuddle him, tell stories, pat him …

So, if habit is formed, we can break the habit too. With our patience & love towards our children, we parents can do everything to correct our children.
