By Admin,

Marble, granite, quartz, limestone; all of these have one thing in common: They’re all used as kitchen and bathroom countertops, depending on the homeowner’s preference. In recent years, marble has become the favorite for several reasons. Some people enjoy the design marble presents, and others adore the reflectiveness the stone naturally has. No matter the case, marble is here to stay.

We decided to do further research into the specific stone material due to its recent spike in popularity. What we came back with was rather exciting, and we figured you’d like to be clued in on the fun facts we found. Without further ado, let’s dive right on in!

Marble gets its name from…

Marble is a reflective, gloss-like stone surface. So, getting assigned the name “marble” totally makes sense, considering the term originated from the Greek word “marmar” (“marmar” means “to glisten”).

P.S. The English language did an excellent job with their vocabulary choice here.

Marble takes hundreds of years to form…

Marble doesn’t just become marble overnight. In fact, it starts its life out as limestone that’s buried deep underneath the Earth’s surface. Over approximately one hundred years, the pressure from the Earth and the heat that the ground gives off naturally transforms the limestone into marble, hence why it’s called a metamorphic stone. Once the hundred years are over, the limestone forms into blocks of marble.

P.S. This hard and dense material is more colorful at the end of the process than it was when it was initially limestone.

Egyptian pyramids were made with marble…

Back in the day, when the Egyptians were still building pyramids, they used beige marble to construct the smaller versions of the buildings; the larger pyramids were built with white limestone.

That’s not the only thing that was built using marble; blocks and columns decorating the Egyptian temples were also made with this stone material.

P.S. You can even find hieroglyphics on some marble panels outside of the city of Cairo today.

Marble has many uses…

When marble is ground down into a powder-like substance, it can be used to make adhesives, paint, and even phone cases. What’s more is that the minerals inherently present in marble have specific properties within them, including properties that can reduce digestive acids; that’s probably why some medications have hints of marble powder in them, like Alka Seltzer. P.S. We know, it’s weird to think that marble can be turned into a powder that’s present in your stomach-issue medication, but it’s a reliable product.

Marble constantly changes…

Marble is a metamorphic stone, as we stated earlier. With that being said, the material can change over time depending on the environment its present in. For instance, If acidic substances or extreme heat is applied to its surface, the marble may morph its shape and color.

P.S. The marble isn’t going to instantly change shape and color in response to acidic substances and extreme heat, but it can happen over time. We recommend that you regularly seal the surface and clean the marble on a regular basis.

Marble is hypoallergenic…

Good news! If you have allergies year-round, or even if you have allergies periodically throughout the year, you may want to do everything in your power to purchase hypoallergenic materials, products, surfaces, etc., for your home. Well, the marble material is dense and has a low porosity throughout, making the stone hypoallergenic.

P.S. Carpets harbors dust. Wood can mold if it gets wet. Marble, on the other hand, does not collect any allergens. You’re safe with this!

If marble hasn’t won you over yet, all these fun facts may have done the trick. Can you believe Egyptians used the stone to build pyramids? Does it amaze you that the surface is hypoallergenic?  How crazy is it that it takes hundreds of years to form? These facts definitely stumped me. What about you?
