Why dental implants are an ideal choice instead of dentures

By admin,

All smiles are beautiful, surely. Each one unique and always different than the last one we encounter. However, many folks would agree that an incomplete smile is a path they’d rather not tread. But with circumstantial factors, like injuries at mind, incomplete smiles do occur. Fortunately, we are at a time where there are many alternatives to seek if ever afflicted with a couple of missing teeth. Some popular choices are the well-known dentures and the ever-popular dental implants. Here are a few things I learned of each.

 About Dentures

Between the two, dentures are the less expensive option. Having colleagues of mine that do own dentures really helped to gather some must-have information about this tooth replacement system. Here is what I found:

 • They are removable – Dentures can be easily removed for cleaning.

• Inexpensive – They do not cost much, but it depends on how many teeth need replacing.

• May slip – With dentures, some of my friends told me that they can have a tendency to slip, which can cause problems when eating or talking.

• Must watch what you eat – Some foods that are hard may break the denture. Also, gooey and sticky foods can be caught in the wire, making it necessary to remove them for cleaning.

• May cause sores – Dentures that do not fit well can irritate your gums and cause sores. Because your gums continue to shrink, they will have to be adjusted every so often by the dentist.

• Not real durable – Dentures will often last only about five to seven years.

 About Dental Implants

Dental implants have been around forever, according to Val Daniyar, a dental implant specialist from Naples, FL. According to the National Institutes of Health, the success rate for dental implantation is about 90 to 95 percent after 10 years. As time goes on, these and veneers become a trending option for many choosing a fix to their troubled smile, with Instagram and other social media outlets being king in the present time. One factor to note is that dental implants do cost a pretty penny when compared to their much less expensive cousin, dentures. However, sometimes the value and return go hand in hand. For example, a few things to keep in mind:

 • Tooth Replacement – Dental implants can be used to replace one or more teeth. In fact, they can be used to replace all of your teeth.

• Permanent or Removable – Depending on how many replacement teeth you need, dental implants can be made permanent for one or a few teeth, or they can replace them all with implant-supported dentures.

• They do not slip – Because the replacement teeth are anchored on the dental implants, they are fixed and will not slip – no more embarrassment.

• Eat what you want – Because a dental implant acts like your natural teeth, you can eat what you want (I really liked that idea).

• They may last a lifetime – With the right care, they may last the rest of your life.

Another great advantage I found was that they sustain your jawbone. Other tooth replacement systems, including bridges and dentures, do not stop jawbone loss. This can occur at a rather rapid rate, absorbing as much as 20 percent of the width of your jawbone in the first year – and it keeps on shrinking. This fact makes it so that your jawbone becomes weak, and it also is why you need to keep getting new dentures. Unlike other tooth replacement systems, dental implants help to prevent jawbone loss.

Implants will also help to protect your gums. While dentures will rest on your gums and increase the possibility of making them sore, implant-supported dentures rest on the implants and not on your gums.

 Changes in Your Face

Your jawbone will continue to shrink with dentures. This shrinkage is not only in width but also in height. As it shrinks in height, your chin will collapse. This will change your smile and make you look older.

With dental implants, your bone height can be restored. This can be done with bone grafts prior to implant surgery. It is a separate surgery and it will take from three to six months to heal afterward.

 All-on-Four Dental Implants

If you are missing all of your teeth – or soon will be, I learned that it is not necessary to have implants under each tooth. A denture-supported implant only needs four implants to hold it in place! This system can also be used for partial dentures. It not only helps keep the cost down, but it also makes the implant process much simpler.

 The Implant Procedure

Dental implants can be given in one of two ways: in several steps over several months, or all at once.

Dentists will install dental implants in two different ways. Some will install the implants and then let the bone and gums heal before proceeding. It will normally take between three to six months for the bone to attach to the titanium implants (the root part of your new teeth). During this time, your gums will grow over the top of the implants and it will have to be removed to expose the implants so the teeth can be attached.

The other technique used to install the implants is to install the implants and teeth all in one surgery. This system is also called “teeth-in-a-day,” and it enables the whole process to be completed on the same day.

 Best Candidates

Although most anyone can get dental implants, there are some qualifications that will determine how soon you can get them. Ideal candidates need to have sufficient bone in the jaw and healthy gums – no gum disease. In order to determine this, the dentist will take x-rays and possibly a CT scan.

People who want dental implants can also get them, but they may need other treatments first. If present, gum disease will need to be treated and bone and gum grafts may also be necessary. If so, the grafts will need to completely heal before the implants can be installed.
