Tips on Travelling Alone with a Baby or Toddler

By Pranusha,

I have travelled alone with my daughter from when she was three months. my husband lives in a foreign country. Its extremely difficult during international travels. So there are lot of things that we moms have to consider before our travel as once you enter the airport you are all by yourself.

Wear Comfortable Clothing with lots of Pockets

I know you need to turn into a superwoman for a day. You need to keep your wallet, mobile and everything into your pockets as your hands will be occupied with a baby. Also wear comfortable footwear, preferably sports shoes to walk around huge airports.

Get kids used to Prams and Buggys

Most airports have prams and buggys, it is a good idea to borrow one, some international airports are so big that you will go crazy carrying your kids around.

Hand Baggage

Organise your hand baggage, take essential stuff, make a list many times. It is very difficult to carry a hand baggage and a baby or child around. The best idea would be to buy a good backpack so that your hands are free.

Right time for check-in

Make sure you dont reach very early or very late. If you reach very early too much time at the airport will frustrate kids. If you can travel during their nap hours. it will really help your journey.

Be Shameless

I know its crazy, but its not an easy task travelling alone with a child. So ask for help from anyone and everyone. But never let anyone hold your baby, if you need to use the restroom contact airport authorities and make sure the airline sends you a ground staff to hold your child.

Select your seat well in advance

Make sure you do an online check-in and select the first row or an isle seat so that you can take a walk with the baby.

Carry all medication

Carry all medication that will be required in the flight. Carry eardrops and plug your kids ears with cotton as ear pain will make their journey bad. If you have a baby seated on your lap, try not to take the food provided in the flight. Bring along few chocolates and munch it in the flight. You can feed your baby with infant food if provided.

Be Strong and Be positive

These are only few tips, but when your alone at an airport with a baby or child, there are so many things you will encounter. Especially people who dont let you go ahead of them in queues. Make sure you walk ahead and let authorities know that you are alone even at immigration.

Dont panic and stay calm.
