By Varda Agrawal,
After marriage, we .new age couples don’t wish to end up being pregnant very early. Unlike older generations, where more emphasis was given to building up a relation & enjoying the marital bliss. This honeymoon period of a married couple varies from couple to couple. For some it may be 1 year for some 2-3 years.
Then comes a phase where you wish to have a baby & start a family. But getting pregnant is not as easy as it seems…
Very few lucky couples end up getting pregnant in a singe month of trying for a baby. It is even harder for couples who live apart due to work commitments or have very busy schedules.
As for contraception, you need to have knowledge on various aspects of human fertility & various methods of contraception; similarly for getting pregnant you need to know few aspects about male & female fertility.
The knowledge of ovulation plays a crucial role in the process of getting pregnant.
Ovulation
Ovulation is the process of the release of an egg from the ovaries. The egg survives 2 days post ovulation in the female reproductive tract. These two days are considered most fertile days of the woman’s menstrual cycle. The chances are getting pregnant are more in these days.
So if you know your most fertile two days & you know its time to plan accordingly, and you are most likely to get pregnant!
There are various methods which are used to find out these fertile days. I have listed all of them for you… Some are age old while few are brand new!!
Calendar Method
If you have regular periods this method may work for you.
Count back 12 days and then another four from the day your next period might start. . You may ovulate during this five-day range.
Basal Body Temperature
Basal body temperature, or BBT, is your lowest body temperature in a 24-hour period

Though we don’t feel the change, few days after ovulation, BBT rises. There is increase of only 0.4 to 1.0 degree Fahrenheit.
It can be detected by taking BBT every morning with a special thermometer.
This has to be noted everyday for few cycles.
Cervical Mucus
The days of ovulation can also be tracked by noting the vaginal discharge. The discharge that needs to be tacked is the cervical mucus, which changes during cycle.
For most of the month, you may have very little of it and feel dry. But as ovulation approaches, you’ll notice much more cervical mucus. It’ll be clear, slippery, and stretchy.
