Queries from Moms

Does pregnancy affect my gums and teeth if so how??
Pregnancy can have a profound effect on ones gums and teeth if the oral hygiene is compromised. An expecting mother is prone to gum inflammation and subsequent bleeding from the gums with or without mobility of certain teeth. This could be attributed to an alteration in the composition of plaque(soft deposits on teeth) due to an increase in progesterone hormone as  well as a reduction in immunity of the body during pregnancy .

Does the oral health of the mother affect the baby’s health??
There have been conflicting views on whether poor gum health in expectant mothers can translate into an increased risk for adverse pregnancy outcomes like , pre eclampsia ( high blood pressure),preterm deliveries or low birth weight babies. An increase in the bacterial products carried from the mothers mouth via the blood stream could indirectly increase biologically active molecules that could foster premature labor. broken silver fillings could leach mercury which has been linked to autism in newborns.

Is it ok to get treated for any dental problem during pregnancy?
It is prudent to avoid extensive dental treatment especially in the first and third trimester of pregnancy. since formation of the organs of the fetus occurs in the first trimester , it would be highly sensitive to external influences. In the 3rdt trimester , dental treatment could trigger a premature delivery. Early in the 2nd trimester is the safest for dental treatment like scaling, fillings or root canal treatment. The presence of acute infections or abscess warrants prompt intervention under pregnancy-safe antibiotic coverage irrespective of the stage of pregnancy. Major surgeries and unnecessary x ray exposure should be postponed until after the delivery.

What are the common dental problems during pregnancy?
Bleeding and swollen gums, mobile teeth, foul mouth odor, acidic erosion of inner aspects of teeth due to regurgitation of gastric contents and vomiting are the common problems faced by pregnant women. An increased susceptibility to tooth decay and foul mouth odor due to a reduced salivary flow have also been observed.

Tips to tackle/avoid them?
a)good home oral care including brushing twice a day with a fluoridated tooth paste, flossing and use of a non alcohol based mouth rinse.
b) increase water intake thereby improving hydration of the oral tissues.
c)routine dental visits and professional cleaning of teeth if necessary(2nd trimester preferred)
d)bring all acute infections under control immediately using safe antibiotics recommended during pregnancy by your gynecologist and the dental health professional.

Queries related to babies and kids

Does oral care begin before the first tooth appear? When should i first clean my baby’s teeth and how?
Yes, oral care should begin before the first tooth erupts. A good time to do it is during nappy change time on a table where there is adequate lighting. A clean damp cloth can be used to wipe the debris off the gum tissue after each feed. Alternatively an infant tooth brush with a small head and plain water can be used to clean the teeth once they erupt.

At what age should the brushing routine be introduced?
An infants teeth can be brushed as soon as the first tooth erupts(6-10 months at age). Until age 2 ,a soft bristled infant tooth brush with water can be used twice a day.Above age 2, brushing using a fluoridated tooth paste twice a day can be done. fluoride supplements(topical/systemic) can be provided under the supervision of a dentist for older children who are highly prone to tooth decay.

When to start using a toothpaste?
For children aged 2 and above ,brush twice a day with a pea sized amount of a dentist recommended fluoridated toothpaste can be used but the child must be asked to spit it out after brushing and not rinse.Parental supervision is mandatory while he child brushes until age 7 -8 years as fine motor skills are not yet fully established.

When should my baby first visit the dentist??
The first visit is ideally scheduled within 6 months of eruption of the first tooth and during the early part of the day when the child is not tired. It is important to make this an exciting and enjoyable experience ,so talking to your baby about what to expect when shes at the dentists in a positive way works like magic..

Does bottle feed affect the teeth in any way?
Putting a baby to bed for a prolonged period with a bottle of sweet beverages or milk in his mouth in conjunction with poor oral care could lead to a rampant decay of teeth referred to as nursing bottle caries. This primarily affects the upper front teeth and can also be seen in breast fed infants with prolonged feeding habits. This decay presents initially as whitish areas of decalcification around the teeth and then becomes pigmented to a light yellow or brown colour.

Is thumb sucking harmful? How can i stop it?
During the first one and a half years of life it is considered normal. If the habit persists beyond five years of age ,it can have a detrimental effect on the dento facial structures leading to proclination of teeth , open bite or narrowing of upper arches.

Tips to prevent /control it
a) feed the child whenever hes hungry for as long as he wants
b)breast feeding as much as possible has not only a nutritive but also a psychological value
c) discourage the habit at its inception.if the child must suck, encourage dummy sucking.
d)ensure that the child is emotionally secure by spending quality time with him.
e)chemical(pepper, castor oil) and physical (bandage , tapes or thumb guard)restraints around the thumb can also be tried.

Any easy and practical tips to maintain a good oral health//?

  • Brushing twice a day in circular motion with a fluoridated tooth paste
  • Rinsing the mouth thoroughly every time you eat .
  • Reduce intake of candies, chocolates, sweets and carbonated drinks.
  • Use of a xylitol mouthwash and oral floss to maintain hygiene
  • Vist your dentist every 6 months for a thorough evaluation.

Mantra for work life balance and tips for working mothers.
I strictly adhere to the principle of not bringing work home. I switch off from work with a robotic precision once Im home with my 5 year old boy.I ensure that my son gets my undivided attention thereby spending quality time with him. I persevere to never miss any occasion that may be of importance to him and I always try to read him to sleep at night to instill a sense of security.

Tips for working moms
Working mothers should strive to give their best shot at work as well as at home without being too hard on themselves. its important to love and respect yourself as much as you love your family and work. Its alright and essential to be selfish at times and take time out and do things just for yourself…that would make you a much more lovable person to have around. so happy parenting!!!

Importance of grandparents in your child s life

Complete family

Hello Mommies,

Everyone seems to be in the holiday mood this month with Christmas and New year around the corner. Baking cakes and goodies, decorating your homes with the Christmas tree, endless shopping and buying special gifts for the near and dear ones, the festive spirit is in the air!!

Talking about gifts, this is the time when the entire family gets together to share love and happiness with ample FOOD !! With the nuclear family setup nowadays, festive season is when we actually get to meet even our parents and grandparents. It is so lovely to see our little ones bond so well with the older generation.

We are all so caught up with our routine that sometimes we forget to think about the older generation and all their love and support which we take for granted. Not all of us still live in joint families these days for different reasons, and hence the grandparents are left out of the core family. As parents it is up-to us to create a positive environment and experience for our child when they meet their grandparents.

Though we may find the grand parenting style different and outdated, one thing we all must agree is that the Grand child to Grand parent bond is very special and unique, bringing in its own joys. It is the most enriching bond in a family.

I am not trying to promote the joint family system here, but just reminiscing the days I spent with my grandparents especially my dear grandma who was very much involved in my upbringing.

Grandparents have multiple roles to play….

-The storyteller: They are a treasure trove of tales and stories of the past.

– Role models: They are not only our role models but also for our children. With their immense experience they help and support the family in difficult times.

-Nurturer: With both the husband and wife working these days, and all the negative news we read/hear about the maids/nannies, grandparents are the best caregiver of our child after us. We can rest be assured that our child is in safe hands.

– the playmate: the grandparents are tension free and bubbling with so much energy in presence of their grandchildren. They loose all their inhibitions and become a child themselves while playing with the grandchildren.

– family historian: Your child can learn and know all about your rich family culture and traditions from the grandparents. Right from the interesting stories of your ancestors to the yummy traditional delicacies. they know it all.

I am concluding this with a quote :

“Grandparents are a delightful blend of laughter, caring deeds, wonderful stories and Love.”

“Grandchildren are the dots that connect the lines from generation to generation.” Lois Wyse

HAPPY HOLIDAYING everyone !!

vasambu new

This one is from my mommy and my aunt who used to force me to give this to my baby. Although I was hesitant at first I started using this herb after consulting my doctor. The herb itself looks like a small shriveled bark and has a good odor. In Tamil it’s called Vasambu or “Pillai valarpan” which means you can grow your baby with this herb. “sweet flag” in English, bach in Hindi.

You can see more about this herb on wiki here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acorus_calamus

How to use this herb:

Just burn it over a flame/lamp and rub this charred herb on a stone with some water or breastmilk. This is the basic paste for all ailments.

For Colic Infants:

Just take a little paste on your finger tip and rub it on the baby’s tongue every morning. Or try elcarim drops which contains this herb. Reviewed here.

For Loose motions

Mix this paste with honey and again rub on the baby or kids’s toungue

For Vomitting

Mix this paste with milk or breastmilk and place some on the tongue.

Natural Insecticide:

Tie this herb to a string and place around the baby’s neck or waist to ward off insects.

Homemade Kajal

Many of us Indians put a black tikka/bindi on the baby’s forehead and legs as it is believed to protect the baby from evil eye. You can apply this herb paste on the forehead instead of store bought kajal. Continue reading

Other uses: Used to treat Speech disorders and known to build the child’s intellect.

Availability: You can find it in Ayurveda stores or Kotakkal stores. Bangalore people can find this in Malleshwaram and Shivajinagar. Mail me if your looking for the correct address.

The herb has to be burned over a flame. If you have more just put some in your own cupboards to keep insects away.

Diy Mosquito Repellant Spray for Babies and Kids

repellaent

One of the main purpose of starting this blog was to promote natural and organic methods of upbringing. So we have started a new section on Do-It-Yourself products for the baby and kids. Do Like our page on Facebook for regular updates.

Right-now the market is filled with so many mosquito repellant products for kids, like patches, bands, sprays and creams. Most of the products claim to be organic, but they do have a lot of chemicals in them. The ones made for babies and kids had one common ingredient citronella oil. These products have a few drops of citronella oil and it costs a lot, the smell disappears in no time making these product useless. So here is a DIY spray which is very simple, easy and cost effective.

Citronella oil and eucalyptus oil are easily available in the market and costs around Rs 150 a bottle which will easily last you for more than a year. Sadly witch hazel is not available in India, the imported ones are very expensive.

You need:

  • Eucalyptus oil – 20 drops
  • Citronella oil- 10 drops
  • Water/Witch Hazel – 30 ml
  • Lavender or Tea tree oil or lemongrass oil (optional) for healing and smell. (This is expensive so I skipped this one) – 10 drops
  • Spray bottle

Procedure:

In a spray bottle add water/witch hazel, to this add the oils and shake. You have your spray in a min.

How to use: I spray it on my baby’s clothes, play area, cradle etc. Even if a little falls on the skin its normal. Same would apply for bigger kids.

10 things to do after a Miscarriage

Source

Hello Mommies, today lets spare a thought for mommies who have lost their little ones. Even if these precious babies were in a mother’s womb for a short span, it gives her the special bond and feeling of motherhood, and the loss is so painful that only someone who has gone through it would know.

Do share this article with your loved ones who are going through this phase. You don’t need to say anything to them. Just a hug, your patience to listen and prayers is enough to bring their life back to normal. Moms I’m sharing this from my own experience, I know how it feels and my prayers are with all of you:

Care for your Body: There are so many things that we just give up when we fail, but sadly after a miscarriage its the same body that needs to deal with another pregnancy. So take plenty of rest and prescribed medications and allow your body to heal.

Allow time to mourn: Nobody in the world is strong enough to handle a loss and just be normal. So take time to mourn, its not wrong at all. Most of our grief comes as a shock and then moved to anger (with yourself, god, karma what not) and finally acceptance. So know which stage your are in and always seek help till you accept the loss. Remember “healing is not forgetting”

Regularize your Cycles: We are not in a race to make babies, right? Most couples try for a baby very soon just to overcome their fears and land up in another loss. So make sure you are back to normal.

Avoid Insensitive People: There are many people in the world who are always blessed with the right things at the right time, and they are too self obsessed to care about your feelings. So avoid all these people till your back to normal.

Share your Sorrow: Do not crouch over your own pain, share your sorrow with your loved ones.. Its even better to find a counselor for both you and your husband. I would suggest telephonic counselors, you will never be judged. There are communities on Facebook for miscarriage support do join them and seek help.

Do something for the lost child: Some people plant a tree or donate money to an orphanage in memory of the lost child. Do it if it makes you feel good.

Pray: No one can help you but GOD. So pray every single day for what you want. If your Hindu there are specific temples where you can pray for conceiving and childbirth. You can see the article here.

Lose weight and Eat Right: Its very important to lose weight and eat right to increase your fertility. Do checkout our weightloss section for more. Do not forget to take your folic acid supplements. Go on a  holiday that involves a lot of activity like trek and rafting.

Medical Help: If you have consecutive losses, you have every right to investigate on what went wrong. Do ask your doctor and find a friendly gynecologist who understands how important this is for you.

Hope: Finally my friend hope is why we all live on this earth. Don’t lose hope. Everything will be fine.

Santa Claus: Relevance Of Imaginary Character

Source

Imagination is funny

It makes a cloudy day sunny…

Is Santa Claus for real? What about the Tooth Fairy and the Garbage Man?

For an adult, these questions might seem insignificant, but how a young child replies is important as the answers are symptomatic of cognitive development. But even if we cast the learning aspect aside, imagination is such an essential part of growing up. The age old perception that imagination is something, by which children can escape reality in their early years and then shove fantasy away when older, is nothing but a myth. Child-development experts have convincingly concluded that there’s nothing better than imagination to grasp the basics of reality in order to comprehend it fully. Imagination is not merely about fantasy as children can also learn about history, people and events they do not directly experience.

ROLE ESSAYED BY TOYS

Kids Toys are a great medium to boost both imaginative and pretend play. So when you are entering a toys shop, It is a good idea to select a toy that would work best for both solo as well as group play. Kids need a little help to imagine and toys are the best alternative. No matter what toy it is. It can be while dressing up Barbie or even while role playing with any other dolls or kid’s toy. Toys play an influential role in triggering a child’s imagination. To take up an example, we have Hobbes a stuffed tiger toy in reality that sparked Calvin’s imagination. But a Santa Claus toy works for all children.

SANTA CLAUS

Santa Claus is by and large, the most preferred imaginary role model even though he makes only an annual appearance and that too, through the chimney. A recent study showed that 70% of 3-year-olds believed that Santa Claus was real and what is astonishing is that instead of this belief diminishing with age, Santa followers peaked at 83% by age 5 before subsiding when kids were 7 years old.

THE POSITIVE RELEVANCE OF SANTA CLAUS

Santa can be a role model for adults as well so what if he is a figment of our imagination. In today’s world, everything is about discipline and is deadline oriented. Kids have to be taught the positives of Santa in terms of efficiency levels and that is one of the main reasons why Santa Claus is so relevant even today. Consider this!

– Santa Claus visits 983 homes per second on Christmas Eve putting even Superman to shame.

– Santa has a calculated 31 hours to deliver gifts on Christmas Eve making him the most efficient imaginary character ever.

NOTE FOR PARENTS

(1) Encourage imaginative and fantasy play in your children and let them be inspired by superheroes and imaginary characters.

(2) If your child has an imaginary friend, just like Calvin has Hobbes does not break the myth. Instead, cultivate his or her imagination. Continue reading

(3) Remember, fantasy friends help kids cope with stress. The ability to pretend in children is an area of strength. It is possible for children to fix all their problems using their imagination.

(4) It has been observed that fantasy play is directly related with many positive attributes. Pre-school kids having fantasy friends are more creative, possess greater social understanding and skills and also form a perspective about others easily.
