Monthwise Baby Apparels

cloth final

Even before the baby is born, the first thing that we always worry about is baby apparel (find here). Though the order is always food, shelter and clothing, the first thing we do after a baby is born is cover them.

So what are the most essential baby apparels? I decided to do a post when I was looking at my little one’s clothes collection that I was saving carefully to donate.

Since I had a summer baby, I did not need many woolen wears. But wraps are essential to protect the baby from a new environment.. Also use mittens and socks atleast for the first 1-2 months. If its summer use mittens and socks made out of cotton. I avoided mittens but its useful when you cant cut baby nails.
Baby skin is very delicate and remember you need an extra layer of clothing as compared to what you would wear. Continue reading

Johnson’s Baby Share the Language of Love

SLOL Drop Box 1

What is ‘Share the Language of Love’?

Share the Language of Love is an initiative by Johnson’s Baby to inspire mothers across various cities to contribute their child’s old or unused articles to an underprivileged child in need of them. The campaign is an extension of our core philosophy of ‘care’ and we have partnered with GOONJ, a reputed NGO that resonates this philosophy, to make the campaign a continued success.

Together, we organize various collection touch points in major cities in India to encourage mothers to contribute.

The idea behind the campaign (The Joy of Sharing)

The core idea is to develop a platform wherein less fortunate children can also ‘experience the joys of childhood’. The same platform also uplifts the spirit of all those who contribute as they feel they have played a small but significant part in helping these children feel the warmth and care they desire. We would like the articles, which were bought by parents for their children out of love, to have a positive in the life of yet another less fortunate child and brighten up his or her childhood. The act of bringing joy to another child’s life certainly has a heartwarming effect on mothers, who best understand the happiness of a child. By contributing, the mother will also become a role model for her child, instilling the value of sharing and compassion in him or her.

The partnership with GOONJ

We wanted to engage with a partner that shared the same commitment, passion and belief towards this campaign and we approached GOONJ without any hesitation. The team at GOONJ has been very co-operative and has helped us grow SLOL from year on year.

The partnership is strengthening pillar to pillar with Johnson’s Baby handling the front end allowing it easy for mothers to contribute and GOONJ ensuring the collected articles reach to the needful.

In fact various incidents that we have come across have further strengthened our belief in this activity as a sharing a simple toy/book/clothes brings a huge difference in the life of the underprivileged child.

–          Colorful aanganwadis bring children back

–          Material like toys, games etc. are a big motivator for the little children in aanganwadis in villages. These are otherwise bland spaces with very little color or activity to involve or interest a child. As a result they would earlier come in for a little while, only long enough to pick their midday meal, even that they would prefer finally eating at home. As a result all the Government’s child health initiatives centered on the aanganwadis are not that effective. When GOONJ turned some aaganwadis into colorful spaces with charts, toys, games books etc. the place become vibrant and kids who had never seen so many toys and games, were elated. They not only came in hordes, they stayed back to play and spend as much time as possible in this new happy environment. Their prolonged stay in the aanganwadi, helped facilitate proper health checkups for malnutrition and other diseases.

–                    In the words of an aanganwadi worker “Pehle baccha aaata nahi tha, ab baccha jata nahi hai.”

–          A soothing touch to the disaster hit children

–                    Toys, games, books etc. play an impactful role especially for the disaster hit children. Whether it’s Bihar, Uttarakhand or Muzzafarnagr camps. Children respond similarly to these symbols of innocence and fun. For the time that they spend with these things, they tend to forget, even if momentarily, the trauma of the natural or mad made disaster they have gone through.

–          A healing touch to sick children

–                    In Madhya Pradesh, we found that at a hospital when stuffed toys were given to a  child at the last stage of malnutrition, who otherwise had very little energy for any movement, the holding of a toy not only brought a glimmer of a smile but it also made him do some movements. As he clung to the toy, it made his last days more cheerful.

–          We are taking this as a new approach for the malnutrition areas where we advocate that the treatment doesn’t mean food supplements and medicines only but the playful and healthy atmosphere has a much larger impact.

How has the campaign fared in the past?

The campaign started in 2012 and the next year, the contributions received doubled as compared to 2012. Last year (2013), we also had a ‘Share the Language of Love’ bus, which travelled over 5 cities in 21 days, to create awareness for the campaign and encourage contribution. There was enthusiastic participation from a lot of retail partners who volunteered their space to set up collection centres. In all, more than 250 collection centres across 12 cities over 3 successive weekends were setup. In addition we got 65000 + calls on IVRS, collection centers in 250 stores in 12 cities and 170 residential societies in 5 cities, mobile collection buses in 5 cities, and moved a 450,000 strong community on Facebook. Continue reading

What is happening this year?

This year the collection center is being set up in 14 cities including Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Cuttack, Pune, etc. over 3 successive weekends.   Collection drives shall also begin in 170 residential societies in 5 cities.

In order to contribute, we have made available various touch points through which a mother can contribute to the campaign. To get more information about a nearest collection center, all one needs to do is give a missed call on 1800 267 6767/ 1800 267 2222 which will guide you to the nearest out of the 300 collection centers set up.

What happens to the items once we contribute? How does the process unfold?

After all the items are left in the drop box for the day, they are collected from all the drop boxes in the city and transported to the nearest Goonj Collection Centers.  Here the things are cleaned, sorted and pressed. These are transported to the local Goonj centers and given to the needful.

Fair Skinned Babies – Not A Prerequisite For Product Endorsements

By Saranya Iyer

Advertisements these days make a mad rush in entertainment industry. From Body creams to moisturizers, from soaps to cleaning lotions, all these ads show how our dark skin could be shed and a fair skin can be worn. Every odd commercial promotes fair skin. I have grown up seeing these commercials which showcases a fair skin model endorsing the fairness creams or body novelties.

The situation is quite similar for men too. Gone are the days  when fairness products were restricted only for women. Nowadays, fairness creams and lotions are available in the market well enough to entice and attract men to use it and get themselves a good girl of their choice. The fairness territory invites and allures men with a broad smile.

But the sad part is baby ads. I have never ever seen any dark skinned baby getting promoted for baby products. Those little innocent ones are always fair. And their cute little Bottoms which bounce when one touches are unfortunately fair. Why this situation has entered in our country? Why are we chasing fairness and forgetting that dark and dusky skin is most beautiful? Continue reading

We are so much obsessed with fair skin. Is fairness that important? Is it the only factor to term someone as beautiful? If one is dark, then it means they are not pleasant looking, does it? When one uses instant skin lightening, there are plenty odd people in the west who stand below the sunlight and get their skin tanned. The tan skin which scores to dark and dusky shade is very attractive for foreigners. If this is what they are doing, why we are going so much gaga about getting fair.

Last year, a commercial for a vaginal wash was promoted as a product which lightens the woman’s private part. There are plenty of websites showing treatments to lighten the skin as well as newspaper columns offering
advice on these issues. This is like an insult to an injury. I have seen the history of baby products commercials. Every company portrays a cute little infant as fair. Their skin is nothing less than white. None of them had any of the babies with black or dark shade. Don’t we have enough reason to be happy for our skin tone? Does our complexion reflect an inferior image vis-à-vis the western world? The complexion is not all important but our level of confidence is what matters.

I know some of the head hunters turn down applicants as they look for candidates whose complexion is fair. Moreover, matrimonial ads too say that the boy needs a girl who is well educated, fair and good-looking, tall and etc. This is the progress of our country. We ape west in all forms but this imitation is very much bitter. In all sense, exhibiting babies with fair skin tone in commercials should not be encouraged as it
leads to gross discrimination of color tone.

Nandita das, Actress and social activists initiated a campaign called Dark is beautiful which has picked up very well in our country. It should get more support from public. This initiative was implemented way early in west. This has come to our country nearly after a decade which tells the sick state of our country. It is not only an obsession but also a prejudice which has been a driving factor for women to kill themselves. If pale skin is desirable, Lets boycott black colour entirely. Let’s not use black colour in our life anymore.

I would request advertisement officials to reconsider the advertisements and do not show
the infants with a light skin to endorse baby products. We love our babies no matter how
they look or dress. They don’t have to necessarily be beautiful and FAIR. As Nandita rightly
put, we will stay un-fair and beautiful.

All about Nursing Strike

BF

Hello Breastfeeding moms

Recently we visited my daughter’s Pediatrician and I saw a lady with a small baby and she was sobbing. When I asked her what happened, she said her baby was refusing to nurse and even refusing the bottle. The baby was around 3-4 months. Since she was alone and had a big bag to carry I accompanied her to the doctor’s room.

My doctor’s conclusion was that the baby starts seeing things clearly around this time and is very distracted. So they just refuse to feed, you need to put the baby to sleep and when he is almost dosing off, you need to introduce the breast or the bottle. I saw my doctor swaddle the baby and do the “Mmmh Mmmmh ” sound and slowly rocked the baby. When the baby was almost about to sleep she introduced the bottle and the baby finished the whole bottle in no time. You can use the same technique for breastfeeding. Continue reading

Another suggestion was to apply some glycerine to the lips as dried lips too will make the baby refuse milk. So this was just one case. Lets see what are the other reasons babies refuses to nurse.

  • Ear infection or blocked nose.
  • Teething as there can hurt.
  • Change in the milk taste due to medication or pregnancy.
  • Sudden reduce in milk supply.
  • Change is climate or schedule.
  • Strong odors from the mother or surroundings.

What should I do??

  • Feed the baby as mentioned above.
  • Try a different position like lying down or nurse while walking.
  • See all the points and check if you can make changes to the environment
  • Get your baby tested to rule out infections or stuffy nose.
  • Always be with your baby and give them extra love during this time
  • Contact a certified lactation consultant.

Tips for Buying Baby Food

baby food

Hello Moms,

There are so many varieties of baby food available in the market these days. You have pureed fruits and veggies, cereals and formula milk to name a few. So how do you decide what your baby likes? What do you look for in baby food jars? Do let us know.

Formula milk is one of the most commonly purchased product from the baby food section and I’m sure every baby’s first food would have been a store bought cereal. Usually the fruits and cereals used in baby food is fresh out of the market.

We too started with Nan pro from the day my daughter was born and later moved on to Cerelac. Some stuff that my baby loved were Heinz Cheesy Pasta and Gerber Apple Sauce. Gerber was convenient to carry around and now since she is 1 year we replaced Gerber with flavored yogurt. Though we always recommend home cooked food, it is impossible to carry home cooked food everywhere. Here convenience is the key. Luckily for us baby food is less processed and they use fruit sugars and also the salt content is monitored. Continue reading

But keep in mind that you need to feed your baby twice the quantity of store bought baby food as compared to home cooked food. So here are some tips before you purchase baby food:

  • Look at the ingredients list and always prefer food with lesser ingredients.
  • Are you particular that all the ingredients are organic? Do look out specifically for organic brands.
  • Is your baby allergic to gluten, dairy etc ? watch out. Provide a gap of at-least a week before you introduce any new food.
  • If your choosing jarred food select jars according to your baby’s portion. It is not suggested you reheat baby food repeatedly.
  • Choose baby food according to the age of the baby. Though some suggest age groups 4 months plus, please ask your pediatrician if you can introduce food other than breast-milk and formula that early.
  • Don’t repeat the same food for more than a month, try out varieties.
  • Check if the food can be microwaved if your baby is particular about hot food.
  • Look at all the ingredients thoroughly and check if the food can be prepared at home especially fruit purees.

Six Most Recommended Breastfeeding Aids

Hi Mommies,

We all know by now that breastfeeding is not a cake walk, and all of us would have faced one or the other issue initially. So today I thought Ill do a post for all the new moms who are facing issues with breastfeeding. From my own experience I can tell you that I wanted to give up many times, but then with the help of all the modern aids I sailed through and I think its the best decision I made in my life.
Today Ill tell you about breastfeeding aids that we get in the market and how it can help you. Though buying all of this is not necessary, some of these products will help you during your trouble times.

Breast Pumps:

They are now in the bags of every working mother. It is a must when you plan to return to work, hand-pumping takes hours to fill even half a bottle. Though manual pumps are good, I would definitely recommend the electric one as its quicker. Though I didn’t use one myself, a friend of mine swears by it. It also helped her when she was suffering from abscess and could not feed for some days.

Nipple Protectors/Shields

This one is not a must by, but it was very useful when my child faced latching issues initially. It helps greatly with a nipple sore and allows the nipple to heal.

Nipple Creams

They are made of pure lanolin which is organic. It is very safe for the baby too if consumed, but I would still suggest you to wipe it off before feed as it would alter the taste of breast-milk. Nipple creams help a lot with breast-sore. But you can also follow my simple home remedies here.

Breast pads

This is another product that most working women skip and land up with stained shirts. Breast-milk is not water so even after drying it does leave a stain and can make you feel embarrassed. There are so many varieties available in the market. I prefer the disposable ones, the cloth one did not work for me as they would move.

Nursing Covers

Another product that is totally upto you to purchase. Helps a lot of moms who are always on the move and cant find a secure place to feed. Get your babies used to covers from the beginning as they would refuse to cover themselves up later on.

Feeding pillow

This one was a boon for me after a C section. Though I used it only for a few months, it really helped feeding my baby when I had severe backache. I literally could not hold the baby up for long hours. With this one I used to just relax. You can see my review here.
