As you all know, Im a big fan of organic products for children. Being from Karnataka I have played with wooden toys made at Channapatna from when I was a little kid. We would pick them up from roadside vendors while traveling from Bangalore to Mysore as the town is on the way to Mysore.

They are made of wood and they only use vegetable dyes to paint these toys. The History dates back to Tipu Sultan times. The best part is that you have so many varieties. You can find toys for babies, kids and even chessboards and dice games for adults. Babies love to bite on them so it can be used as a teether.

Sadly these artisans dont know how to market there produce. You get heaps of toys for few hundreds. Toys are all below Rs 100. They are available at Bangalore too (MG road). I have seen few online stores selling them for exorbitant prices. Do buy these toys when you visit Bangalore or if you find them at exhibitions, and prevent this art from dying. Wood can be easily recycled. Below are some cute toys from my daughter’s collection, hope you like them.
