Few days back my son fell sick. He had an upset stomach. So we visited his pediatrician, who told us that he has got stomach infection, due to which he is vomiting & having watery motions throughout the day… which continued for a few days.

During this time, he few times, did a green potty. At that very moment I was alarmed , because both my mothers ( Mother & Mother in law ) had told me to be watchful , that he should not do  green potty , as it is not considered to be normal.

As a new age mom, I took to internet, to get answers to my curiosity, and got some relief to my worried heart.

This is the information I got, in the course of finding answers to the question in my mind ‘Green Poop’ Is it Normal???

Normally, stools, gets it’s color from Bile, Yellow green fluid, produced by liver & stored in Gal Bladder. It helps in digestion. The bile is, broken down by the enzymes in the process of digestion & excretion. Thus the excreted product has different array of colors.

Hence, the green poop signals that the stools are excreted very quickly.

These are the reasons, why your baby may have a green poop.

Food Intake

What you eat has effects on your body, good or bad or normal. Thus when your child does green poop, first check what he ate a day before. Normally the most common reason behind a green poop is food intake, which also includes food additives & dyes used.

Green vegetables contain chlorophyll, green pigment, which may give colour to the stools. Hence if your child ate Broccoli or spinach a day before, he may have green potty.

Supplements and Medicine

If child is on some medicines or still takes a formula, then he may get a green potty.  The Antibiotics may also affect his stool color.

The other reason for a green color potty may be that your child may be having diarrhea. If your child is having frequent, watery, loose potty, he must be having diarrhea. The green color during diarrhea is because stool passes quickly that it doesn’t have time to fully form and firm up, hence bile is also not broken down, due to lack of time.

While doing this quick search , I found out that , there are different things regarding baby stools , we parents need to watch out for… as what’s in your baby’s diaper , symbolizes… something or other about your baby’s health.

No wonder, every time I consulted Pediatricians, about any illness of my son … he always asked me about his potty status! Now I know why??

So, I will update you, regarding the different things we need to observe regarding what is in our baby’s diaper … in my next post… What is in Your Baby’s Diaper??
