10 Foods to Avoid Feeding Babies

Babies should be exclusively breastfed or formula fed for the first 6 months of their life.

Here is a list of food items that you may avoid or consult your pediatrician before introducing them to your baby, before he turns one year:

Cows/Buffalo milk/Soy milk: Babies cant digest the proteins in milk and cows milk contains bacteria. You can give them yogurt after 6 months.

Honey: Honey contains harmful bacteria and high levels of sugar.

Nuts: Whole nuts causes choking. Be extra careful while introducing peanuts as it has harmful allergens. But nut powders can be introduced one by one.

Half cooked eggs or meat

Fish high in mercury and shellfish

Sugar/Salt – It is recommended to avoid them but adding a little will do no harm. Try to substitute with rock salt and jaggery.

Egg Whites – Very high protein hence feed them the yolk till they turn one

Fruits or fruit juices high in vitamin C like oranges, limes and strawberries. Introduce them slowly and  one by one.

Any food that does not melt in the mouth and which is a hocking hazard.

Fast food is high is saturated fats and has to be totally avoided. Stick to home cooked food only.
